01 Dec GUIDED WAVE TESTING
Guided wave testing is an advanced NDT technology used to remotely analyze assets for flaws and corrosion over a long distance.
Direct contact with the assets is not necessary to conduct guided wave testing.
Why Guided Wave Testing?
Piping systems often have very unorthodox shapes and locations which makes it difficult to perform inspections.
The normal Ultrasonic Testing method in NDT requires physical access to the hard to reach areas to perform the inspection. This makes it impossible to conduct ultrasonic testing in some piping systems.
What is Guided Wave Testing?
Guided waves have been structure-borne ultrasonic waves that are transmitted through a piping system confined and guided by its own geometric boundaries.
Guided ultrasonic waves are transmitted through the pipe axis. The waves get reflected from local cross sectional regions like a crack or corrosion defect in the piping systems.
By measuring the arrival time and amplitude of ultrasonic signals, the defect location and size can be estimated. Guided wave testing uses 5 to 250 kHz operating frequency, which is lower compared to ordinary ultrasonic testing. The low operating frequency of guided wave testing reduces the attenuation for long range pipeline inspection.
Advantages of guided wave testing
- Fast and precise qualitative inspection technique, with the capability to inspect up to 1500 m per day;
- In-service inspection with a small amount of surface preparation;
- High inspection speed;
- Inspection of areas with limited access;
- Inspection of isolated pipes;
- Inspection independent of fluid type inside the pipe.
Guided Wave Testing Can be Used for,
- Insulated Piping
- Buried Piping/Road Crossings
- Wharf and Jetty Piping
- Offshore Piping (in splash zones)
- Pipe Penetrations/Bund Wall
