API 1169 Course: Pipeline Inspector Certification Course, Exam Details

API 1169 certification is popularly called as pipeline inspector certification. The primary objective of API 1169 certification is to understand the requirements needed to inspect the onshore pipelines. API 1169 is the globally accepted and industry wide used standard for the inspection of newly constructed on-shore pipelines.

An API 1169 certified pipeline construction inspector must be knowledgeable about the general on-shore pipeline construction inspection guidelines, responsibilities of a pipeline inspector, general pipeline safety measures and environmental and pollution control measures.

Qualification to Appear for API 1169 Exam

API 1169 certification only demands minimum education and experience requirements from the applicants. Any previous work experience related to inspection and non-inspection will be considered. The industry in which the applicant had experience bears more importance. Any experiences related to the oil and gas industry or related industries like  civil construction, mining heavy equipment related etc will have more weightage. 

The years of experience required and academic qualifications to appear for API 1169 is listed below.

  • For candidates with Pipeline inspection experience, 3 years of experience is required if there is no formal education. But if the applicant has 2 years of degree/diploma, only 2 years of experience is required.
  • For candidates with oil and gas inspection experience, 4 years of experience is required if there is no formal education. But if the applicant has 2 years of degree/diploma, only 23 years of experience is required.
  • For candidates with non-inspection related pipeline experience, 5 years of experience is required if there is no formal education. But if the applicant has 2 years of degree/diploma, only 4 years of experience is required.
  • For candidates with non-inspection related oil and gas experience, 6 years of experience and any certification from AWS, CWV, NACE, API or ASNT is required. But if the candidate had at least one year of pipeline experience in general oil and gas industry, he can apply for the API 1169 exam with 4 years of experience and any of the before mentioned certifications.

Exam Structure and Fees details

Candidates wanting to appear for API 1169 exam must  submit an application online on the official website of API. All the exam periods have application deadlines, and if applicants want to appear for the exam in a particular month or date, deadlines for those exam periods must be checked.

There is an exam application fee of $480. Candidates working for some organizations might be eligible for a discount. To find out whether you are eligible for a discount, you must contact the company you are working for.

Exam details:

  • 3.25 hours long.
  • There will be 115 questions,  of which only 100 are scored. The remaining 10 are pretest, which won’t be scored. 
  • All questions are multiple-choice and closed-book. Paper and reference materials are not allowed into the examinations.
  • This exam has a set passing scaled score. 

Re-Certification

  1. API 1169 certification is valid for only three years.
  2. Employment verification is not required during recertification process
  3. Certified people must apply for recertification 90 days prior to the certification expiration date. 
  4. API also allows a 90-day grace period for submitting a recertification application. But there will be a nominal fee for late applicants.

If you fail to submit the application for recertification during the 90-day grace period, the certification will expire. In such an instance, you have to remit the full application fees and go through all the procedures for acquiring certification as if it is for the first time.
