15 Jan Ground Penetrating Radar Testing in NDT
Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technique in NDT is used to diagnose and evaluate the quality of reinforced concrete.
Due to the complicated properties of reinforced concrete, usual non destructive testing methods like ultrasonic testing and infrared ray testing cannot be used in the most testing site environment.
Hence Ground penetrating radar is the most sought after non destructive testing method for non-metallic structures. GPR testing is critical for the preservation of concrete structures. It is also highly effective in studying non-electro conducting materials and for detecting the presence of metals inside the non-metallic structures.
Ground penetrating radar working principle:
GPR technique uses radio waves in the frequency range 10 to 2000 MHz. Electromagnetic waves in the above frequency are transmitted through the surface of the object by moving an antenna across its surface. The antenna repeatedly transmits the EM waves to the subsurface and when these waves strike the boundary of a contrasting dielectric material inside the object it will reflect the waves back. These reflected waves from the surface are collected by a receiving antenna. The profile of the object will be generated by simultaneously towing the antenna across the surface of the object and displaying the resulting echoes of individual EM pulses. A composite image will be displayed on the control units monitor based on the reflected pulses.
Applications of ground penetrating radar
GPR is widely used in civil engineering projects for subsurface scanning in sand, bridge decks and locating live utility ducts and conduits in a construction site. Below are some most important applications of ground penetrating radar testing in NDT.
- Locating embedded steel reinforcements
- For predicting the thickness of concrete elements
- Detect potential defects or voids like delaminated areas
- Mapping subsurface delamination in bridge deck
- Identifying the location of embedded objects like cables, tanks and pipes.
