Leak testing is a quality control step to ensure the integrity of  machinery and equipment, and is a type of non-destructive test (NDT). Leak testing involves simple testing procedures like bubble testing by using visual examination to complicated testing methods using radioactive gases.

Major Leak Testing Methods (NDT)

The four major leak testing methods are bubble, pressure change, halogen diode and mass spectrometer testing.

Bubble Leak Testing

This non destructive testing method relies on visual inspection of air bubbles leaking from a pressurized system.

Pressure change

Pressure change leak testing can only be performed on closed systems. The leakage of pressure is monitored after pressurizing the system or pulling a vacuum inside the system.

Halogen diode leak testing

This non destructive testing is carried out using a combination of air and a halogen based tracer gas which is used to pressurize the system. Halogen diode detection method can be used after a preset time to identify the leaks in the system. 

Mass spectrometer leak testing

In this testing method, a spectrometer is used to identify the leaks. The testing process is carried out inside a test chamber which will be pressurized using helium gas or a combination of helium and air. The test object will be inside the chamber and the spectrometer receives air samples from the chamber which helps to identify abnormalities on the surface of the test object.

Advantages of Leak Testing

It is extremely beneficial to conduct a leak testing on industrial tanks and vessels before they are put into service. Leak testing can efficiently verify is the most preferred NDT methodology for tanks and vessels.

If a leak is suspected in a system, leak testing methodologies can help to identify the exact location of leaks to assist the repair and maintenance work.

Leak testing ASNT Level 3 Certification  Exam and Course Syllabus

ASNT LT NDT Level 3  examination is 4 hrs in length, and has 135 questions of equal value.
